In the framework of this course students learn the methods of modern project management in engineering. In groups, the so-called "Construction Teams", they handle two different projects. The particular thematic expertise is provided by the respective institutes during so-called "Expert Sessions". IWES is responsible for the foundations of wind energy technology that are required for the simplified design of an offshore wind farm.

The module also gives an overview of the broadness of civil engineering. Moreover, students discover the structure of the Faculty and the activity areas of the Institutes.

Highlight: Business Game

Learning soft skills by doing: Students work out the thematic part of an engineering project in the framework of a business game. They present the findings in front of the class. In this way the handling of TIB services as well as modern presentation techniques are trained, which is very important for further studies.

The concept of the module is unique: The combination of a business game and thematic contents gives students the opportunity to learn key competences in project management and to familiarise with the Institutes. It thus gives a perfect orientation framework – especially concerning future career options.

Learning Objectives

The course gives students in the entry phase an overview of the academic broadness of the chosen studies and an impression of possible future career options. Moreover, it assists in orienting in the studies and in structuring the own learn and work activities. After successful completion of the course students are able to:

  • work on a joint project in a team,
  • fulfill the University's requirements for the preparation of a report and a presentation of results,
  • handle situations and workflows that are typical for studying,
  • explain fundamental facts of the own "expert area".

Contents of the Expert Sessions at IWES

In the expert sessions, IWES introduces to the following topics:

  • Introduction to offshore wind energy
  • Composition of a wind turbine
  • The ressource wind
  • Power curve and annual energy production
  • Wind farm layout
  • Logistics and installation
  • Economic aspects

Expert Presentations

During the Expert Sessions, students give presentations on pre-defined topics. At IWES, students investigate information on already existing offshore wind farms and summarise the results in front of the class. In this way they not only obtain key competences, but also gain insights in the technology of offshore wind farms, the possibilities of installation and logistics and wind farm layout. In the presentations, participation is compulsory.

Exam Modalities

For the successful completion of the course, students need to carry out a multi-part exercise. That contains a written report as well as Expert Sessions, in which the students give presentations. The results are finally presented to a jury which awards a prize to the winner team.
